handle is hein.journals/nilq2 and id is 10 raw text is: NORTHERN IRELAND LEGAL QUARTERLY Lord Justice Babington THE new Lord Justice is a member of a family of note identified for long years with the City and County of Londonderry. Educated at Glenalnond and Trinity Col lege, Dublin, he won while at Trinity the Gold Medal for Oratory of the College Historical Society, and obtained a Moderatorship in History and Political Science at the degree examinations of 1899, and was called to the Bar in 1900. Sometime Lecturer in Equity to the King's Inns, he re-arranged and re-wrote Osborne's Jurisdiction and Practice of the County Courts in Ireland in Equity and Probate Matters. He was appointed.Attorney-General in 1925 and received a Knighthood in the Coronation Honours of 1937. His career of steady progress at the Bar was dis- tinguished by his deep understanding of legal principles, and his fearless advocacy was always characterised by breadth of vision and wide human sympatiies. A fine golfer, the new Lord Justice was runner-up in the Irish Amateur Golf Championship in 1909 ; he was one of the Irish representatives in the international matches of 193 ; and recently succeeded Sir Plunket Barton as President of the Royal Portrush Golf Club. Lord Justice Babington shared in the work of establish- ing the Bar of Northern Ireland and imbuing it with the fine traditions of the old Bar of Ireland. Some years ago Sir William Moore paid a deserved tribute to him as one of those to whom the maintenance in Northern Ireland of the best traditions of the Irish Bar were chiefly due. It is largely owing to his labours that the Northern Bai enjoy the splendid accommodation provided for them in the Royal Courts of Justice ; but his interest has not been confined to his own branch of the profession, and he has played a great part in bringing about those friendly- relations between the two branches of the profession which grow more cordial as year succeeds to year. Lord Justice Babington's loyalty to the Bar, whilst nearest his heart, was part of his loyalty to the profession as a whole, and he fully realised that Solicitors bear a large share of the responsibility which rests on all lawyers of maintaining and strengthening respect for the law. At a time when,, owing to a want. of understanding of the true nature of that heavy responsibility, injustice threatened our branch of the profesion, his breadth of vision and good offices willingly given were very largely instrumental in securing a solution of our difficulties which was equitable and of the utmost benefit to the profession and the public. Lord Justice Babington carries with him to the Bench the respect and gratitude of the Solicitors of Northern Ireland.
