Minister Jane Stewart made the Statement of Reconciliation in 1998, two
years after the last residential school closed in 1996. This statement
acknowledged the multigenerational harms arising from the forced
placement of Aboriginal children in residential schools, thereby creating
B.A., M.M., Ph.d. (candidate). A member of the Gitksan Nation, Cindy has worked in the field
of child and family services for over 20 years on the front line, in professional development
and research. In her current capacity, Cindy is honoured to be the Executive Director of the
First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada <http://www.fncaringsociety.com>.
This national organization promotes the works and knowledge of First Nations child and
family service agencies in Canada by providing research, professional development and
networking services.
Cindy has published numerous research papers, articles and curricula related to Aboriginal
child welfare in Canada. Current professional interests include serving as the Co-convenor of
the Indigenous Sub Group of the NGO Group for the Convention on the Rights of the Child,
Co-director of the Centre of Excellence for Child Welfare, and a member of the Board of
Directors for Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada and the Canadian Education Association.
