War in the Gulf dominated the Lent Term programme: the Foreign Secretary, the Rt. Hon. Douglas Hurd Q.C., M.P. was forced to cancel his visit to the Society at the eleventh hour. A lively forum was nevertheless held to discuss the Relevance of International Law in Modern Society, with contributions from Sir Arthur Watts, Professor Ian Brownlie Q.C., John Toulmin Q.C. and Dr. McCoubrey of Nottingham University. On the national level, the emphasis of the Society's events fell on individual rights and our responsibilities as future practising lawyers. Forums on Defamation and Press Freedom with Charles Wintour, Lord Justice Russell, Richard Hartley Q.C. and Peter Carter-Ruck, and on Police Accountability with His Honour Judge Francis Petre, Peter Winship Q.P.M. and Stephen Grosz were well- attended. Mr. Justice Owen, a pioneer of the new law of marital rape, gave a lively insight into criminal elements of Family law. The Attorney-General, the Rt. Hon.
