This paper is part of a work in progress on drinking in medieval times. This is an essay set in our past, before we ever came up with the notion of alcoholism. At first glance, the evidence is contradictory: most of the people in question drank through- out the day and throughout their lives, and yet few seem to have developed any of the physiological symptoms now asso- ciated with alcoholism. The medieval experience with alco- hol would suggest that alcoholism is in fact a relatively recent phenomenon, limited in time to the past four centuries and limited in space to those areas where food is both plenti- ful and varied.
