Ernest Quimby is an associate professor in the Department of
Sociology and Anthropology at Howard University (P.O. Box 987,
Washington, DC 20059). He is currently the principal investigator
of the federally funded Drug Abuse Research Technical Assistance
Project (DARTAP) for Historically Black Colleges and Universities,
and is a co-investigator on a project to assess the effectiveness
of integrating clinical treatment with supported employment for
the mentally disabled.
Homeless persons with substance abuse and mental disorders
pose special treatment needs and challenges. According to
one client:
I'm very unhappy. I'm depressed. I want my own place, a boyfriend
and a job. I just want to get it together and have a better life. It's
