DALENBERG, PH.D. Seventeen patients who had recovered memories of abuse in therapy participated in a search for evidence confirming or refuting these memories. Memories of abuse were found to be equally accurate whether recovered or continuously remembered. Predictors of number of memory units for which evidence was uncovered included several measures of memory and perceptual accuracy. Recovered memories that were later supported arose in psychotherapy more typically during periods of positive rather than negative feeling toward the therapist, and they were more likely to be held with confidence by the abuse victim. In recent years the phenomenon of recovered memory has taken on enormous scientific, moral, and political complexity. Freud's initial faith that a therapist's false interpretation of abuse to a client would cause little harm' has given way in vir- tually every forum to a recognition of the importance of the social persuasion function of psychotherapy2 and the attendant © 1996 by Federal Legal Publications, Inc. 229
