Hon. Mr. Justice F. A. Hutton

Frederick Augustus Hutton comes of a family which has taken a distinguished part in the public life of South Africa. His grandfather, the late Sir Andries Stockenstrom, was the first Lieutenant-Governor of the Cape Colony. His father, the late Hon. C. W. Hutton, was a prominent politician in the Cape Legislative Assembly and was Treasurer-General in the Scanlen Ministry of 1881. He himself was born at Bedford, Cape Colony, in 1862, and was a second son. His elder brother, Andries, is still in practice as an attorney and is a member of the long-estab- lished firm of Bell and Hutton, of Grahamstown. The pre- sent judge received his early education at Bedford Public School, from which he matriculated in 1880. He then continued his studies at the Victoria College, Stellenbosch, and obtained the B.A. degree of the University of the Cape of Good Hope in 1883. Like many other distinguished lawyers of this country, he started life in the Civil Service and was for two years in the Customs Department. He resigned in order to become Registrar to the Hon. Mr. Justice C. J. MAASDORP, who was then on the bench of the Eastern Districts Court at Grahamstown. The position afforded a favourable oppor- tunity for the study of law and so for the advancement of Mr. Hutton's ambitions. Of this opportunity he took full advantage with the result that he obtained the LL.B. degree of ihe Cape University in 1892. He was at once admitted to the Eastern Districts Bar and started practice at Grahamstown. The leaders of that Bar in those days were Mr. A. F. S. MAASDORP (now Sir Andries), who was Solicitor- General, Mr. VICTOR SAMPSON and Mr. H. F. BTAINE. Al! three have distinguished themselves in their profession and have attained judicial honours.
