A RTHUR DAVIES WEBB.
The late Arthur Davies Webb, whose death at Bulawayo
was referred to in our November number, was an attorney of
whom any community might be proud, and a brief reference
to the honourable record- of one of our oldest readers cannot
fail to be of interest. He was born at Peddie, in the Cape
Colony, in 1848, the son of the late Commandant F.C. Webb,
of that town. He was educated at King Williamstown, and
was admitted as an attorney and notary public in 1870. His
certificate, dated June, 1870, granted by the old Board of
Examiners, is an interesting document, being signed by Wil-
liam Porter, A.-G., as Examiner in Law and Jurisprudence,
by Sir Langhain Dale, Edward Judge and G. Ogilvie as
Examiners in Literature, and by George F. Childs as
Examiner in Science. He commenced practice at Queenstown
where he remained till June, 1897. During this time Mr.
Webb took a prominent part in the public life of his town,
as a keen athlete and supporter of every branch of athletics,
as a volunteer and as a politican. He held no fewer than
twenty-three offices, ranging from president of tennis, cricket
and football clubs, to president of the local branch of the
South African League. As a volunteer he followed in his
father's footsteps, rising to the rank of captain. He took part
in two native wars, the Galekaland and Moirosi's Mountain
Campaigns, for which he received two medals. In 1873 he
married the daughter of Air. H. Bertram, of the Queenstown
district.
His admiration for the late Mr. Rhodes led him to Bula-
wayo in 1897, whither his two elder sons had preceded him,
and there he began a new practice. There he lived with his
family and praztised his profession in partnership with his
