General Dahinden, AMPLE and the AMW Manual This contribution is dedicated to the memory of General Erwin Dahinden: a friend, a colleague and a founding father of AMPLE. AMPLE stands for Air and Missile [Warfare] Programme of Legal Education. Erwin played an indispensable leadership role in launching AMPLE into orbit in 2010 (under the aegis of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy), and I have had the honour of serving as its Academic Director. AMPLE is a training project designed for military officers (both legal advisers and ops officers), especially - albeit by no means exclusively - those serving in the Air Force. So far, approximately a dozen AMPLE training courses have been held, across the world, either in a single country and on the regional level. Each course consists of a series lectures interlaced with small study groups of participants working on a hypothetical scenario, culminating with a debrief predicated on their conclusions. The AMPLE team uses as a basic tool of instruction the Manual on Air and Missile Warfare (AMW Manual) - consisting of 175 Black- Letter Rules divided into 24 Sections - produced by an international Group of Experts (under the auspices of the Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research at Harvard University) and finalized 81
