AEC AWARDS 53 UNCLASSIFIED
PHYSICAL RESEARCH CONTRACTS
Award of 53 unclassified physical research contracts with uni-
versities and private research institutions was announced today by the
U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. Eight are new contracts, and the re-
mainder are renewals of contracts which have been in force.
The contracts, which generally were for a term of one year,
were let as part of the AEC's continuing policy of utilizing private
research laboratories in conducting research related to atomic energy.
Contract proposals are usually reviewed by scientists who are
well acquainted with the field of the proposed research and its rele-
vance to the atomic energy program. Their reviews are taken into con-
sideration by the AEC Division of Research before a decision is made
whether or not to accept the proposal. The contracts are negotiated
and administered by AEC Operations Offices.
Generally, the institutions participate with the AEC in de-
fraying the costs of the research. The institution contributes the
funds and services which it normally devotes to work in that field,
and the AEC provides additional assistance to permit the work to pro-
ceed more rapidly or with an expanded scope.
