Order 73-7-1

                        UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
                        CIVIL AERONAUTICS BOARD
                           WASHINGTON, D. C.

                    Issued under delegated authority
                             July 2, 1973

Application of

TRANS INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES, INC.: Docket 25631

for an exemption pursuant to section
416(b) of the Federal Aviation Act of
1958, as amended.

                     ORDER GRANTING EXEMPTION

By application filed June 19, 1973, Trans International Airlines,
Inc. (TIA) requests an emergency exemption to perform two round-trip
single entity charter flights for the Variety Club of Mexico (Variety),
utilizing 254-passenger DC-8 aircraft. The first flight departed from
Chicago, Illinois to Mexico City on June 24, 1973, and will return
July 4, 1973, at a charter price of $26,612. The second flight will
depart from Cleveland, Ohio to Mexico City on July 4, 1973, returning
July 14, 1973, at a charter price of $27,246.

In support of its application TIA alleges, inter alia, that it held
Mexican authority pursuant to an exemption granted by the Board in Order
72-5-71 for one year ending May 31, 1973; that, during the period in which
TIA held Mexican exemption authority, Variety sought TIA's service for
periods after the expiration of that authority; that TIA has contacted
Modern Air Transport, Inc. (Modern) and been advised by Modern that it
cannot operate the June 24 - July 4 round-trip; that it has not been in-
formed by any scheduled carrier certificated to serve Mexico that it has
capacity for the June 24 - July 4 flight; and that it has not been
informed that any carrier certificated to serve Mexico is able to perform
the July 4 - 14 flight.

In view of the imminence of the first flight, time did not permit
receipt of answers to the application. Acting pursuant to authority
delegated by the Board, the staff granted TIA authority to operate the
June 24 - July 4, 1973 flight, and deferred action on the remaining
portion of the application. 1/
