                               UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
                               CIVIL AERONAUTICS BOARD
                                  WASHINGTON, D.C.

Adopted by the Civil Aeronautics Board r' V-3.
at its office in Washington, D.C.
on the 8th day of August, 1969

    Emergency exemption application of

EASTERN AIR LINES, INC. Docket 21291

pursuant to section 302.410 of the Board's
Regulations and section 416(b) of the
Federal Aviation Act of 1958, as amended.

ORDER GRANTING EXEMPTION DURING STRIKE EMERGENCY

* On August 8, 1969, Eastern Air Lines, Inc. (Eastern), filed an
application requesting an emergency exemption to permit the carriage
of New York-Bermuda passengers on existing Detroit/Cleveland-Bermuda
flights 1/ on August 9, 1969 and on August 10, 1969 during the present
work stoppage which has forced Pan American World Airways, Inc. (Pan
American) to suspend its services in this market.

In support of its request, Eastern alleges that the carrier has
been advised that there are a large number of both eastbound and west-
bound passengers who have confirmed reservations on Pan American's
flights for August 9 and August 10 which flights have been canceled
because of the work stoppage; that although Eastern intends to augment
its regular New York-Bermuda service on August 9 and on August 10 by
one extra section each day, Eastern will still be unable to accommodate
all of the passengers who have confirmed reservations on Pan American's
flights for August 9 and for August 10; that Eastern will have sufficient
space on its Detroit/Cleveland-Bermuda flights to accommodate the above-
mentioned passengers; that the requested relief is necessary because
New York is a coterminal on a different segment from the segment on which
Detroit and Cleveland are coterminals; and that Pan American has informed
Eastern that Pan American does not object to the requested relief.

1/ Eastern has not requested authority to carry traffic in the Detroit/
   Cleveland-New York markets.
