                            CIVIL AERONAUTICS BOARD
                                WASHINGTON, D. C.
                   +Issued Under Delegated Authority
                                 August 1, 1983

Notice of Intent of

WIEN AIR ALASKA, INC. Docket 41029

to suspend service at 13
communities in Alaska, under
sections 401(j) and 419 of
the Federal Aviation Act, as
amended

                      ORDER EXTENDING SERVICE REQUIREMENTS

By Order 82-12-70, dated December 16, 1982, we amon other things (1) dis-
missed Wien Air Alaska's notices at 4 conunities; (2) took no action to pro-
hibit Wien's suspension at Prudhoe Bay; and (3) prohibited Wien Air Alaska fram
suspending service at 6 comunities - Aniak, Bethel, Barrow, Galena, St. Marys
and Unalakleet -- and sought the views of the state on the size of aircraft
that should be required for providing the service at those points. After
receiving the state's views on the aircraft size to be operated at the six Uien
points, we issued Order 83-3-117, dated March 24, 1983, requesting proposals
from carriers interested in providing essential air service for those cnynuni-
ties. In accordance with section 419 of the Act, we have extended for succes-
sive 30-day periods Wien's obligation to provide essential air service at the
six points for which we are processing replacement cases. The latest extension
is through August 2, 1983.

Proposals to serve the six Wien points were due on June 13, 1983. We have
received proposals from Sea Airmotive to serve Bethel, Aniak, Galena and St.
Mary's and from Wlien to serve all six canmunities. Our staff is currently
reviewing these proposals before holding rate conferences with the applicants.
Since we have not completed the carrier selection case for the six points
served by Wien, we will require the carrier to maintain its service for an ad-
ditional 30-day period, through September 1, 1983, or until a fit, willing and
able carrier inaugurates reliable essential air service, whichever occurs
first.

     ACCORDINGLY, n

     1. We require Wien Air Alaska, Inc. to continue to maintain essential
air service at Aniak, Bethel, Barrow, Galena, St. Mary's and Unalakleet for an
additional 30-day period, from August 3, 1983, through September 1, 1983, or
until a fit, willing and able carrier inaugurates and maintains reliable essen-
tial air service, whichever occurs first;
