ORDER EXTENDING REQUIREMET TO PROVIDE SERVICE

By Order 82-12-72, December 16, 1982, the Board prohibited Air Midwest,
Inc., from suspending service at Garden City, Dodge City, Hutchinson, Parsons/
Independence/Coffeyville, Goodland, Great Bend, and Hays, Kansas, and Lamar,
Colorado, and required the carrier to maintain essential air service at the
points for a 30-day period, until February 2, 1983. By the same order, the
Board solicited proposals from carriers interested in providing essential air
transportation at the points. The deadline for filing proposals was
established as January 24, 1983. At the request of Air Midwest, the deadline
was extended until February 14, 1983. By Orders 83-2-6, 83-3-11, and 83-4-1,
we extended Air Midwest's service obligations at the eight points until May 3,
1983.

We received a proposal from Air Midwest on February 11 which proposes to
provide service at all eight points. At this time, we are in the process of
negotiating with the carrier to establish a suitable rate of compensation for
the proposal. Consequently, we must require Air Midwest to continue to serve
the points for an additional 30-day period in order to maintain essential air
transportation. Therefore, in accordance with section 419(a)(6) of the Act, 1/
we will extend Air Midwest's service obligations at Garden City, Dodge City,
Hutchinson, Parsons/Independence/Coffeyville, Goodland, Great Bend, and Hays,
Kansas, and Lamar, Colorado, until June 2, 1983.

1/ Section 419(a)(6) directs us to extend a carrier's service obligations for
30-day periods (after the 30- or 90-day notice period required by sections
419(a)(3)(B) and 401(j)) if we determine that no other air carrier can be
secured to provide essential air transportation to an eligible point.
