 Thirty-Day Notice of

BAR RBOR AIRWAYS, INC. Docket 45793
     d/b/a EASTERN EXPRESS

to suspend service in the New Bedford-
Nantucket market pursuant to section 419 :
of the Federal Aviation Act of 1958, as :
 amended

                        ORDER EXIDING SERVICE OBLIGATION

On August 30, 1988, Bar Harbor Airways, Inc. d/b/a Eastern Express, submitted
notification that it would replace its subsidiary, Provincetown-Boston.
Airlines, in the New Bedford-Nantucket market effective September 6, 1988, and
simultaneously filed a 30-day notice of its intent to terminate its service in
that market, effective October 6, 1988. By Order 88-10-3, the Department
prohibited the carrier from terminating its service for a 30-day period,
through November 4,1988, and requested proposals fram carriers interested in
providing replacement service, with subsidy if necessary. As required by
section 419, we have extended Bar Harbor's service obligation for additional
30-day periods. The latest extension, through March 4, 1989, ws issued by
Order 89-1-47.

At the same time, the Department requested proposals by carriers interested in
providing New Bedford's essential air service to its other hub, New York. We
had previously requested proposals to serve New Bedford-New York by Order
88-7-44, but decided in Order 88-10-3 to request New Bedford proposals to both
of its hubs in one proceeding. Valley Airlines has submitted a proposal to
serve New Bedford-New York, and Express Air has indicated that it will serve
New Bedford-Nantucket without subsidy. Express Air has recently received its
commuter airline authority and is now providing six round trips a day between
New Bedford and Nantucket. We are currently evaluating its capability of
providing essential air service in this market.

We will not have completed this evaluation by the end of the current hold-in
period, March 4, 1989. Therefore, in accordance with section 419(a)(6) of the
Act, we will extend Bar Harbor's service obligation in the New Bedford-
Nantucket market for an additional 30-day period, through April 3, 1989.

This order is issued under authority assigned in 14 CFR Part 385.
