                             TRANSMTTING,

IN  RESPONSE TO A RESOLUTION OF THE SENATE OF MAY 22,
  1900, A STATEMENT IN REGARD TO THE NUMBER OF DEATHS
  OF  SOLDIERS,   VOLUNTEER AND REGULAR, IN THE PHILIP-
  PINES;  ALSO   AS  TO  MILITARY   OPERATIONS IN THE PHILIP-
  PINES.

                                          WAR   DEPARTMENT,
                                          Washington, June 1, 1900.
  Sr:  I have the honor to transmit herewith, in response to the reso-
lution of the Senate of the United States, dated May 22, 1900-
  Resolved, That the Secretary of War be, and he is hereby, directed to send to the
Senate the following information: A statement of the number of soldiers, volunteer
and regular, who have been killed and died from wounds received in the Philippine
Islands since August first, eighteen hundred and ninety-eight; the number of regu-
lar and volunteer soldiers who have died from diseases or suicide during that period;
the number who have been wounded in action, or otherwise, and what proportion of
them are still incapacitated for duty; the number who have committed suicide dur-
ing said period; the percentage of sick, disabled, and invalid soldiers therein; what
diseases have been prevalent, if any, in the military camps on the islands of the
Philippine Archipelago during said time, and what steps, if any, have been taken for
the better protection of their health, and a statement of the number of soldiers who
have become insane since the close of the Spanish-American war while in service in
the Philippine Archipelago, and the disposition which has been made of them. And
also that the comparative losses and disabilities of white and colored troops in the
Philippine Islands be included.
  Also, the territory over which the military operations in the Philippines extended
from September first, eighteen hundred and ninety-nine, to May first, nineteen
hundred.
  The places in which garrisons were established during the period from September
first, eighteen hundred and ninety-nine, to May first, nineteen hundred.
  The places occupied as garrisoin by American troops on May first, nineteen hun-
dred.
