Gender Equality in the

     hemical Weapons Reg

* Data from the US and the UK indicates that the proportion
of women completing undergraduate degrees in chemistry
is higher than in most of other STEM subjects, with nearly
50% of the bachelor's degrees in chemistry being awarded
   to women.2

* Out of the 186 laureates of Nobel Prize in Chemistry, only
   7 are women.

The chemical science community must confront
systemic disadvantages and enable as many differ-
ent kinds of people as possible to contribute to sci-
entific discovery and innovation.
- Royal Society of Chemistry, 20181

The gender gap widens as one moves up from the under-
graduate to senior levels, showing a negative correlation
between the proportion of women and seniority in this dis-
   cipline.

Women's underrepresentation can reinforce existing biases
in scientific research and thwart opportunities for discovery
and innovation in the chemical sciences.

IDEAS FOR ACTION

Engage in initiatives that combat harmful gender stereo-
types in sciences and promote gender equality in STEM, e.g.
OPCW's Women in Chemistry Symposium, Ada Lovelace
Day, Diversify Chemistry

Ensure that women and men are equally represented in
panel discussions, by planning participation early and byfo-
cusing on speaker expertise.

Distribute relevant resources on gender ahead of CWC
Conferences of States Parties, such as the Gender & Dis-
armament Resource Pack developed by the International
   Gender Champions Disarmament Impact Group.

4 Track participation of men and women as speakers and
    make the data available.
