STATE versus IRA BE]?RY,
FOR AN ALLEGED LIBEL ON
) CYRIUS WESTON,S
TFIlE NOMINAL COMPLAINANT IN THIE PROSECUTION,
and the nominal .Movor of the Belg-rade Resolutions
ALSO A DELEGATE TO THE
FYEDEIRAL STATE CONVENTION,
Holden in ilugusta, June 26, 1832;
AND THE PITIFUL INSTRUMENT AND VICTIM
of the desperation and Jolly of the leaders of the
Federal Party,
in the County oj Kennebec!

Our readers have observed heretofore the occa-
sions which constrained us to allude to the above-
mentioned criminal prosecution against one of the
editors and publishers of this paper. Ve did not
attempt, in any former instance, as all must bear us
witness, to impose on the public the opinion we en-
tertained of the merits of the defence we should be
able to make, when the trial should come on before
the Court and an impartial jury; for, although we
had ample means through our columns, and repeat-
ed provocations for taking such a course,as the histo-
ry and result of the case will now show most abund-
antly, the gross impropriety of doing so before trial
was always present to our minds, and we were de-
termined not to incur the guilt of it either in our own
or in public ostimation, even though our passive-
ness should draw downupon us an unrighteous con-

viction of tie charge preferred against us, and render
us the victim of unmerited prejudices created against
us by venal presses and unprincipled men.
But now that the trial has been had, and a jury
of the country has returned a verdict in the
case, it is our privilege and undeniable right to
speak on the subject, and publi~i to the world an
impartial history of the prosecution, and of the po-
litical persecution which it was intended to cover.
The matter, and the feelings in which it had its
origin, were political exclusively. A meeting was
holden in the town oelBelgrade, in this county, on
the 9th of June last, in which Weston, the ntosin-
al complainant, introduced a string of resolutions,
denouneing in the most opprobrious terms the reso-
lutions of the last Legislature respecting the U, S.
Bank,- and the resolutions of the same body re-
specting the Tariff, as directly hostile to the best
interests of this State, and calculated to promote.
