STATEMENT.
The defendant has for a number of years been en-
gaged in the treatment and cure of diseases peculiar to
women
In October, 1879, the plaintiff, (who was then, and
f')r three or four years prior thereto had been suffering
from a disease known as engorgement or enlargement of
the womb) applied to the defendant for treetment. The
detendant in her practice among ladies suffering from
the disease aforesaid had always been in the habit of
making use of a glass pessary which she inserted in the
vagina as a support to the diseased uterus, and by this
mode of treatment had cured a large number of ladies
suffering from the same difficulty with which the plain-
tiff was afflicted. Fols. 23-24-82 to 85-167 to 179.
When the plaintiff applied to the defendant as above
stated, an examination was made, and a glass pessary
inseited as before described. To this pessary was at-
tached a string for the purpose of removing it when
necessary. And the defendant then and there charged
the plaintiff to be sure and remove and cleanse the pes-
