The American Cotton trade is responsible for a number of inno- vations in shipping customs. It created the (( Through Bill of (( Lading )). To its customary proceedings are due the Port Bill of Lading and the Custody or (( received for shipment )) Bill of Lading. While it may be said that the first are now generally accepted, the controversy around the (( received for shipment )) variety is us full swing. There are trades where they have become the usual form of a Bill of Lading and which cannot do without them ; others refuse to recognise them in any shape or form. In cases where goods are shipped from inland places, carried by rail and inland waters to the seaboard, it is rendered impossible for the shipowner to issue a (( shipped )) Bill of Lading. The goods are either received at an inland railway station, carried by rail to the seaport and there boarded on a liner with or without xarious intermediary or subsequent transshipments - as is the case in the United States of America - or loaded on an inland steamer Nxitlh transshipment at the sea-port to a liner, as is the case in China. In both instances the shipper requires a transferable document of title while for the S. S. Company it is well nigh impossible to issue Bills of Lading after the goods have been transshipped to the liner without - at all events - causing much trouble and great delay. It is a matter of necessity for the various interests concerned in the transportation of (le goods to come to an understanding so that one document shall cover the whole transit of the goods from the place where they are forwarded to their ultimate destination. In the one case it is the through Bill of Lading, in the other the (( receix - a ed for shipment )) Bill of Lading.
