AN A C T
To lay out and clear a HI-ghway from Barn/iead to an&ed 24
Feb. 1703.
Nort hwood, in this fate.
IVI1EREAS a petition from fundry inhabitant; of this fate
hail been treented to the General Court, fetting forth that
the Road commonly called the Province Road, laid out from
Durham Co Cohas, is in fame parts thoreof very much incum- Preambk
hered with hills, rocks, &c. and thereby rendered a/mo/1 im-
pafable fir loaded waggons ;-that a Road from Barn/lead,
through a corner of Pittsfield to the main Road in Vorthwood,
might be made, which would remedy the ajorejaid inconvenience
-and prayed that Jonathan Clark, Efq. of Northwood, Col.
Richard Sin kler a/ Barnlirad, and Capt. Reuben Hillof Lee,
or any two of them might be appointed a committee, to lay out
faid Highway, and fully impoweredto have the fame cleared and
made pa//able. Upon reading and cnhiderin the jame, the
prayer thereof appearing reae,'.able. and that making faid
Rcad wonud be jervice'/A to the public,

IT ENACTED EY THE SENATE AND HOUSE
D   oF REPRESENTATIVES IN GENERAL COURT
Convened, That Tonathan Clark, Ecq. of Northwood, Richard snaaing
Sink/er, Efq. of Barniftead. and Cant. Reuben Hill, of Lee, be claufc.
a Committee, they or any two of them, and fully impowered
to lay out by metes and bounds, a Highway, four rods wide,
in fucii a courfe as (hall to them appear rnoft convenient,
from the main country road in Northwood to the province
road (fo called in Barniftead.) And when they have laid out
and marked the fame, that.they notify the fele(lmen of the
towns of Northwood, Pittsfield and Barnftead refpeafively,
to clear and make the famc a good waggon road as foon as
may be. And in cafe faid feleitmen, or the feleamen of
either of laid towns, (hall neglect to perform the fame for the
term of fix months after fuch notice, faid Committee are
hereby authorized to proceed to clcar and make faid road
paffable in the mamrer aforeaid ;--And -they fhall be entitled
to recover all the reafonable expenditures they may be at on
faid road, with coil of profecution of fuch deficient fele &men.
And the felealmen refpe tively of the aforefaid towns, are
hereby impowered to aefs and caufe to be collEted fuch
fums of money as fhall be Iifficient to make the aforefaid SeheOmn to
highway in their towns, in the fame manner as money is ail(sand col.
raifed for the State Tax, unlefs fiuch towns, or any of them lea money.
(hail vote to pay th'r expence of making faid road in Ibme
other legal manner, and perform the fame.
