AN A C T Direding and regulating the appointment choice of PETIT-JURORS. and 17, 17S,, WH E RE I S it is of the utnhol importance tear impartial .furors /hould be appointed to ferve in the feveral Courts of Juftice in this State : 1 E IT ENACTED BV THE SENATE AND HOUSE of REPRESENTATIVES IN GENERAL-COURT convened, That the Selettmen of each town, and of each parifh (having the seleame, the privilege and power of towns) within this State, fhall take a lift of */ a to mnake ls'of the names of all perfons living within their refpedive limits, qualified, the names of perjons quali- in the opinion of the Sele&men, to ferve as -Petit-Jurors each of 4,wcon whom to have an eftate of freehold of foty Jhilings per annum, or thcPetit/ury other ettate to the value offfty pounds ; and lhall chufe out of fuch lift, one third part of the number of the names cortained therein, of fuch perfons as they fhall judge moft fuitable to 1rve as Jurors at the Superior-Court,. and fhall write their names on feparate pieces of paper, and put them into a box, to be by faid Sele6tmen provided for that purpofe.; and the remaincer of the names in fuch lift, to be written as atorefaid, and put into another box, to be fo provided; and the perfons whofe names fhall be fo put in the laft-mentioned box. Thall ferve on the Petit-Jury at the Inferior-Court of Common-Pleas, and Court of General-Seflions of the Peace; which boxes fhall be delivered to the town or pariih Cleik, tc be by him kept under lock. II. AND BE IT FURTHER. ENACTED, That the Venire Facias for Th, Venire Facias, bOu faid jurors, Thall be ifflled by the Clerks of the refpe&ive Courts to he aforefaid, thirty days, at leaft, before the day of the fitting of the 0 To be done Court to which it is returnable; and thall be dire~ted to the Clerk of thirty days, az leafi, hjr the town or parilh, requiring him to caufe to many perfons to be Es/,,ting appointed and returned, of thofe duly qualified, within the town or tbe Con parifh of which he is Clerk, as fhall be mentioned in the Venire, and as fhall be ordered by the Juilices of faid Courts refpedively; who Ihall thereupon, immediately, notify a town or parifh mpeeting, accord- ing to the cultomary method of calling fuch meetings, within fuch A town 3+54
