ChAP. 16.-An ACT to regulate Contracts for Labor between White and
Colored Persons, and to impose a Fine on Persons enticing Laborers
friom the service of their Employers under such Contracts.
Paissed February 20, 1800.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That no contract Contracts be.
tween white and
between a white person and a colored person, for the labor colored person
or service of the latter for a longer period than two months, for labor
shall be binding on such colored person, unless the contract
be in writing, signed by such white person, or his agent, and
by such colored person, and duly acknowledged before a jus- How acknow-
tice, or notary public, or clerk of the county or corporation edged
court, or overseer of the poor, or two or more credible wit-
nesses, in tile county or corporation in which the wlite per-
son may reside, or in which the labor or service is to be
performed. And it shall be the duty of tile justice, notary, Certficate,
clerk or overseer of the poor, or the witnesses, to read and what stated
explain the contract to the colored person, before taking his
acknowledgment thereof. and to state that this has been done
in the certificato of the acknowledgment of the contract.
2. If any person shall entice away, from the service of an- rPnlimcnt for
other, any laborer employed by him under a contract, as eitltInhg away
provided by this act, knowing of tile existence of such con-
tract, or shall knowingly employ a laborer bound to service
to another under such contract, lie shall forfeit to the party
aggrieved not less than ten nor more than twenty dollars for
every such offence; to be recovered by warn, ,t before any
justice of the peace.
3. This act shall be in force from and after the first day of Cominnencelient
April, eighteen hundred and sixty-six, and the first section
slall not apply to any contract made prior to that date.
CuAr. 16.-An ACT to aliend ad re-enact sections 1, 8, 5, 7 and 15 of
chapter 196 of the Code of Virginia for 1860, in regard to UnIawful
Marriages.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That sections clil. 1 6, 1  ,
one, three, five, seven nid fifteen of chapter one hundred
and ninety-six of the Code of Virginia for eighteen hundred
and sixty be amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows,
to wit:
 1. Any person who, being married, shall, during the (Ir tiQ Crime of
life of the former lusband or wife, marry a-,other person in  ,
this state, or if the marriage with such other perpnl take
place out of the state, shall thereafter cohabit with su(:h other
fperson in this state, shall be confined in the penitentiary not
ess than three nor more than eight years.
3. If' any person marry, in violation of the Iinth or ,)r 011,
tenth sections of' chalter one hundred and eight, lie sh1all be Ilth, ,,rIl,,
