CHAP. ,.-An ACT to amend and re.enact an net further to provido for the
Public Defence, passed October 3, 18Q.

Act amended   Be it enacted by the general assembly, that the act passed October
ronenacted  third, eigiteen hundred and sixty-two, entitled an act further to pro-
vide for the public defence, be amended and re-enacted so us to read
as follows:
Slaves, how    1. Be it enacted by the general azisembly, that it shall be the duty

Confederate States, to call into the service of the Confederate States,
for labor on fortifications and other works fi~r the public defence
within this state, from time to time, for a period not exceeding sixty
days, a number of male slaves between the ages oft eighteen and
fifty-five years, not exceeding ten thousand at nny one time, an) not
exceeding in any county, city or town, one-fifth of the number of
male slaves therein between the ages specified, to be apportioned by
low appor.  the governor. Such requisition shall be apportioned ratably among

the requisition shall be made, so as to charge each slaveholder with
the same proportion of his male slaves betw en the ages sp'ecilied,
capable of performing ordinary labor, to be judged of by the court,
When governor which may be demanded from his county, city or town: provided,
May exemapt
nouute      however, that the governor, in his disecretion, may exempt wholly or
partially, from the operation of this act, suel counties as may have
lost so large a portion of their slaves, in consequence of their escape
to the public enelny, as will materially affect the agricultural pro-
ducts of such counties. And the governor may exempt such other
counties as, from their geographical position or contiguity to the
Peraons, how  pulic enemy, lie may deem expedient. And in any county, city or
elepted    town partially exempted under this statute, any person who may
,satisfy its county or corporationcourt, or any person appointed by
the governor for that purpose,,that lie or she lns lost one-third part
of his or her slaves liable to work on the public works, by said slaves
going over to the enemy, shall ie exemupted from the operation of'
