Be it further enacted, that the clerk of this house forthwith send Copy, where a copy of this act to each clerk of the county or corporation courts, nk and to each commandant of the different diviiions of the Confederate States army in this commonwealth. 9. This act shall be in force from and after Its passage. Be it enacted by the general assembly, that any free negro who .re, negrooR, lio whn to be coni. has been or may be hmceafter arrested by authority of any military itttvd to Jan0 o oflicer of the Confederate States, shall, upbn the warranut of comnmit- poorhouse meat of such otlicer, or any other military officer of the Confederate States, be received into his jail by the jailor of any county or corpo- ration, and by imn safely kept, according to tile warrant of conmnit- meat, until discharged by due process of law; or such military officer may, upon a like warrant of commitment, require the overseers of the poor of any county, city or town to receive and keep such free negro until discharged i aforesaid. 2. The jailor or overseers of the poor shall, for the support ofDnly otjlor • ~ ~ I o(1versee~rg of any such prisoner, be paid by the Confederate States, and for a fail- tho poor ure of duty as to any such prisoner, shall be liable to the Confederate States in like manner as a jailor, ill the case of a prisoner committed under the authority of the state, would be paid by or liable to the state . provided, that nothing herein contained shall be construed to impose a liability on the overseers of the poor for the escape of a prisoner received under the provisions of this act. 3.
