lead to the conviction of a free whito person engaged in carrying off' or
attempting to carry off a slave, or in any manuner concerned in aiding
or persuading a slave to escape or attempt to escapo, shall  e entitled
to a reward of five hundred dollars; to be paid by tile state on tile
order of tile court convicting tile party of such offleuse: provided such
conviction he procured by other testimony than that of the informer;
or if such testimony be used upon the trial, that the same shall be sue-
tained by other corroborating facts or circumstances, to be certified by
said court.
§ 2 . Ift any owner or keeper of a ferry or bridgo across a water Pealty for at.

1. Be it enacted by the general assombly, that the folurth section Of Code . 441.

is hereby re-enacted so as to road as follows:
11§ 4. Every person wvho may arrest it runaway slave, andi deliver Reoward for
such slave to the owner or his agent, or to soine jailor at hi jail, witi arrest of

estate to which such slave belongs, a reward therefor; that is to say, if
such slave be arrested in this stato, except in the counties herein after
specially provided for, and within fifty miles of his residence, a reward
of five dollars; or if more than fifty miles, tenl dollars; antd if in any
other slavehnlding state, excepting tile portion of Marylad herein after
oxcepted, if within fifty miles of his residence, twenty, anti if more than
fifty miles, thirty dollars. And in every case, .the person making tile Mileage allowed.

mile, for necessary travel from the place of arrest. The hirer of any
slavo shall not be liable for the payment of any reward allowed by this
section, unless such runniug away was caused by the had treatment of

apprehending such slave.
