court of the said city, under the provisions of the act of assembly
in that case made and provided, unanimously made and entered
tpon record an older, reciting the particular instance of, good con-
duct for which he had been emancipated, and his general conduct,
and giving him permission to reside in the said city; that in conse-
quence of the great expense of living in the said city, he is desirous
of removing and fixing himself in the country, and has petitioned
the legislature to grant him general permission to reside in the com-
monwealth : Therefore,
Uope tier al- 1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the said Hope
reman Butler shall be and he is hereby permitted to remain as a free per-
son within this commonwealth: Provided, That if the said Hope
Butler shall hereafter be convicted by the verdict of a jury, or the
judgment of a court, of any offence against the laws of this com-
monwealth, the privilege hereby granted shall thencef rth cease and
determine.
Commeneement. 2. This act shall be in force from and after the passage thereof.
CuAP. 217.-An ACT allowing Ned Adams, a free man of colour, to remain
in.the commonwealth a limited period.

time. county of Campbell, who has been lately emancipated, to obtain the
means for the removal of himself and family out of this common-
wealth, the said Ned Adams be allowed to reside as a free person
in the said county of Campbell, for the term of five years, but no
longer; and if at any time within that period the county court of
the county of Campbell shall see cause to order the said Ned
Adams to depart the commonweallh, they shall have full power so
to order, and thenceforth the leave of residence hereby given shall
cease.
Commeoncement. 2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
CHAP. 218.-An ACT allowing Frederick Williams, a free man of colour, to
remain in the commonwealth for a limited period.

Frederick Wit- 1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That with

limited time. in the town of Lynchburg, who has lately purchased his freedom,
to obtain the means of purchasing his wife and children, who are
slaves, in order to their removal with him out of this commonwealth,
the said Frederick Williams be allowed to reside in the said town
of Lynchburg, as a free person, unmolested for the term of five
years, but no longer; and if at any time within that period, the
hustings court of the said town shall see cause to order the said
Frederick Williams to depart the commonwealth, they shall have
full power so to order, and thenceforth the leave of residence hereby
granted shall cease.
