C AP. 209.-An ACT to establish the town of Ripley at the seat of justice for
the county of Jackson.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That not exceeding Town or Ripley
thirty acres of land, the property of Jacob Starchdr, lying at the emtebllnhetL
seat of justice for the couhnty of Jackson, as' the same has already
been laid off, and may be hereafter further laid off and extended
into lots, with convenient streets and alleys corresponding,thereto,
shall be, and the same is hereby established a town, by the name of
Ripley; and that Joseph Mayres, Ira, Lindsey, Robert Louther, Trustees.
Jacob Starcher and Peter Click, gentlemen, beand they are hereby
appointed trustees thereof, who shall, before they enter upon the
duties of their office, take an oath before some justice of the peace
for the county of Jackson, to' execute the same faithfully and im-
partially, according to the best of their skill and judgment; any
three of whom may form a quorum, and proceed to business, under
the authority of this act.
2. Be it further enacted, That the trustees of said town, or any Pewerto make
three of them, shall be, and they are hereby empowered to make by-Iaw, Ale.
such by-laws and ordinances for regulating the police thereof, and
for the regular building of houses therein, as to them shall seem
best; and the same to amend, enforce, alter or repeal: Provided,
however, That such by-laws and ordinances shall not be repugnant
to or inconsistent with the constitution and laws of the United
States, or of this commonwealth.
3. Be it further enacted, That the said trustees, or any three of oeneral powers.
them, shall have power to remove or abate nuisances, or cause the
same to be done; and to improve and repair the public streets and
alleys; and to do or cause to be done all other things necessary or
proper for the general good of the said town, within the limits of
the powers conferred by this act. And to enable the said trustees to Power to levy and
