This act shall be in force from its passage. Commeneement. (JUAPTER 7.-An act allowing certain free persons of colour to remain in the State for a limited time. (Passed December Slat, 1628.) Whereas, it appears to tihe General Assembly, that by the will Preamble. of James Scott, formerly of Russell county, Phillis and Hannah, his slaves, together with the children of the said Hannah, were emancipated, to take elfect upon the death of the testator's widow, and real estate was devised to them; that since the death of the said widow, (which happ:ned about three years ago,) the said lannah has contracted for tle purchase of her husband, at the price of six hundred and twenty dollars, which sum she expects to be enabled to pay within the term of five years; and having, together with her mother, the said Phillis, who is old and infirm, petitioned the Legislature that they, and the children of the said Haniniah. may be allowed to remain in this State during the said term: 1. lie it enacted, That the said Phillis and Hannah, and the Phillisa And Han. children of tihe said Hannah, shall be, and they are hereby per nai, and the cli- mitted to remain as free persons within this Commonwealth, and .dnofHonnah, during thpermitted to re. to reside in the said county of Russell for and during the term of main in the Cort. five years from the passage of this act, but no longer: And ifrmonwealth for a they, or any of them, shall remain in the Commonwealth beyond limited time. the said term, they shall forfeit their freedom, and be liable to presentment, prosecution and sale, in the manner provided by the act passed the twenty fiourth day of February, eighteen hundred and twenty-seven, entitled, ,an act to amend the act, entitled, 'an act reducing into one, the several acts concerning slaves, free negroes and iiulattoes. 2.
