CHAPTER l.-An act imposing taxes for the support of governmeut
[Passed Februauy lgth, 1823.]
1. Be it enacted by the General .ssembly That the public taxes Taxes for I W3,
for the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty-three, shall on lands;
be as follows, to wit: on lands, for every hundred dollars value,
agreeably to the act for arranging the counties into districts for
the election of senators, and for cqualizing the land tax, passed
February the eighteenth, eighteen hundred and seventeen, and
the act further to amend and explain the act, entitled, ' an act
for arranging the counties into districts for the election of sena-
tors, and for equalizing the land tax, passed March the first,
one thousand eight hundred and nineteen, eight cents ; for all Onhousesaitllot3
houses and lots in towns, two dollars and three cents, for every in towns ;
hundred dollars yearly rent or value thereof; for every slave Slaves;
above the aoie of twelve years, (except such as have been, or may
be exempte, in consequence of age or infirmity, by the respec-
tive county or corporation courts,) forty-seven cents ; for every lnorses, asses,
stallion, or jack ass, twice the price at which such stallien or mules, &c.
jack ass covers a mare by the season ; for all other horses, t0seso
mules, mares, and colts, twelve cents each ; for every ordinary Ordinary licenses,
license, or license to keep a house of private entertainment, se- and licenses to
yen dollars for every hundred dollars yearly rent, or value thereof: pe.aoe, oree°i.
Provided, That for no such license a less sum than eighteen dol- ri ..t;
lars shall be paid : .And provided aLso, 'hat where any house of
private entertainment shall be of less value than seven hundred
dollars, but one-fourth of the sum aforesaid shall be charged for
keeping the same : AInd provided further, That no tax shall be
levied on a house of private entertainment, unless the same be
situated within a town, borough, or city, or within eight hundred
yards actual distance from some public road or highway ; for Carriages;
every riding and pleasure carriage, stage-waggon, Jersey wag-
gon, and carryall, and harness belon ing thereto, one per centum
on the value thereof, which value tote estimuated by the coinmis-
sioners of the revenue, in the mode prescribed by law : Provi.
ded, That not less than one dollar shall be paid on each four-
wheeled riding and pleasure carriage and harness ; anid not less
than fifty cents on each two-wheEled riding or pleasure carriagte,
and harness ; and not less than seventy-five cents on each stame
waggon, Jersey wagon, and carryall, with the harness belongil)g
