QONTAIXING ACTS OF A PUBLIC AND GENERAL NATURE.
CHAPTER I.-An act imposing taxes for the support of Government.
[Passed February 19th, 1820.j
1. Be it enacted by the General .lssembly, That the public taxes Taxes for 1820,,q
for the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty, shall be as lands.
follows, to wit :-on lands, for every hundred dollars value, agree-
ably to the act for arranging the counties into di,,triuts for the
election of senators, and For equalizing the land-tax, passed Fe-
bruarytiL,, L 'hteeitlh eighteen hundre'and sevente,:n, and the
act, further to agnead and explain the act, entitled, in act for ar-
ran,,ing the couni;,!s into districts for the election of senators and
far equalizing the laId-tax, passed March the first eighteen
hundred and nineteen, t6vdve and one half cents; for all houses and Iouses and Icts ia
lots in town, three dollars for every hundred dollars yearly rent tovs;
or value thereof; flor every slave above the age of twelve years, Slaves;
(except such, as have been, or may be exempted, in consequence
of age or infirmity, by the respective county or corporation courts,)
seventy cents; for every stallion or jack-ass, twice the price at Stallions; Jackas-
w-hich such stallion or jack-ass covers a mare by the season; for Ses;
other horses, asses, mules, mares and colts, eighiteen cents each ; Other  ahrses as
for every ordinary license, or license to kee a house of' private aOnliny licenses,
entertainment, SCven lollars on every hundred dollars yearly rent anid tukeep houses
or value thereof, to be ascertained ini the imanler prescrib-rl by' p private enter.

entertainment shali be of less value than seven hundred dollars,
but one Fourth of the suin aforesaid shall be charged fir a license
to keep the same: AInd proided jbrther, that no tax shall be le-
vied on a house of pri ate entertainment, ,,nless the saiie be
situated within a towim, borough or city, or withinm eight hundred
yards actual distauce fromt sonne ipublic rOad or Iazhsway ; for every Riding carri.ges
two wheel riding carriage, not exceelin (together with I le lar-

and for every like calrrIage and harness, above the value of one
hunded dollars, one per centumo on the excess of the value of
such carriage beyond one hundred dollars, in addition thereto;
for every plhieton and stage-waggon, not exceeding (together with
the harness belonging thereto,) two hundred dollars value, two
dollars and fifty cents ; ant for every like carriage anl harness
above the value of two hundred dollars, one per centui on tha
excess of the value of such carriage above two, huidredt dollars,
