named Wesley, free from any fine, penalty or forfeiture whatso-
ever, incurred or to be incurred by reason of his removal into this
state, as aforesaid : Provided, That the said Jeremiah Franklin Proviso,
shall, within sixty days from the passage of this act, exhibit to
ole justice of the peace for the county of Amherst, a statement
inl writing, containing the name, age,, sex and dlescription of the
said slave; and moreover shall make oath or solemnn affirmnation be-
fore such justice, that the said statement contains a true account of
the slave so brought, in ; and that the said slave has not been
brougrht into this Commonwealth. for the purpose of sale, or with
intent to evade the laws of this Comilonwealth to prevent the
further importation of slaves; and within sixty days thereafter,
shall return such statement, together with a certificate of the
said oath or affirmation, to the court of the said counti, there to
be recorded : And provided also, that it shall not be lawvful for the Farthcr proviso.
said Jeremiah Franklin, by virtue of the provision in this section
contained, to make any voluntary sale, or contract for the sale of
the 'said slave, within the spa.ce of two years fiom the passage of
this act; and if the said 'eremiah shallmake such sale, or con-
tract, contrary to the true intent and meaning hereof, the said
slave so sold, or contracted to be sold, shall be forfeited, and be
subjected to the same proceedings iand appropriation as if this act
had not been made.
2. This act shall commence and be in force from and after the commence,
passage thereof.

Whereas it is represented to the General Assembly, that I'r.aib.
Thomas Woodford, intending to remove to the state of Ken-
tucky, sent thither, during the last year, twelve negroes, being
his own property; that a family misfortune has since destroyed
the motive which induced him to meditate a removal ; and the
said Thomas Woodford having petitioned the Legislature to per-
mit him to bring back the said slaves, together with their increase
into this state

Priscilla, John, Billy and Peggy, together with their increase, and
to hold the same in this state as his property, free from any fine,
penalty or forfeiture whatsoever.

Whereas it is represented to time General Assembly, by Perryn Preamble.
Cardwell of the county of Patrick, that during the summer of
eighteen hundred and sixteen he removed to this state from the
state of North Carolina, with a bona fide intention of residing
herein permanently; that he brought with him the following
slaves, to wit; Lewis, Betty, Peter, Bill, Delila and her three
small children, which negroes were, some time previous to their
introduction, given to him by his father ; that lie was ignorant bf

fact by the production and record of certificates, till the period
