E it ena'cted by the General Assembly, That it shall be lawi- i ful for the common hall of the town of Petersburg, and they are hereby authorised to appoint a master of police for the said town, who may and shall, during his c6ntinuance in office, have and exereise within the limits of the said town, all power and authority which is possessed or can be exercised by an alderman f the said towi, wYith this exception only, that he shall not sit as an alderman in court, or hear or dete'rmine any civil case out of court. And in case an alderman of the said town shall be ap- Voiuted a police master, such appointment is hereby declared to v.acate that of an aldcman, and the vacancy thereby occasibhed shall be supplied as in other cases. g. And be it further enacted; That the common hall of the said town shall have power to impose taxes on the white and black minale tithables, aknd on the property, real and personal, within the jaid tdwn, for the purpose of paying such salary as shall be al- lowed the said inaster of police ; taking care however, that no thore than one third of the sum to be Ievied, shall be levied oh the jtliables aforesaid. 3.
