GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
CHAPTER 1.
An ACT imposing Taxes for the Support of Government.
o.Passed January S1st, 1806.1
Section. 1. BE it enacted by the General Assembly, That the public taxes for the
year one thousand eight hundred and live, shall be as follows, to wit: On lands, for f., h.
every hundred dollars value, agreeably to the equalizing law, forty eight cents; for itas.
every slave above the age of twelve years, except such as shall be, or have been ex-
empted, in consequence of age or itnfirmity, by the respective county or corporation
courts, forty fbur cents; for every stud horse and jack-ass, twice the price at which
such horse or ass covers a mare for the season ; lbr all other horses, mules, mares
and colts, twelvc cents each; for every ordinary license, twelve dollars and fifty
cents ; for every fbur wheeled riding carriage, except ilit'tons rnd stage waggons,
one dollar and twenty five cents per %i heel ; for all phatons and stage waggons,
eighty four cents per wheel ; and for evry other riding carriage with two wheels,
forty three cents per wheel; lbr all lots and houses in town, one dollar and fifty siX
cents, oi every hundred dollars of the rLnt thereof, to be ascertained by the rent
paid by the tenant: and where such lot or house is in the occup ation of the proprie-
tor, the yearly rent or value thereof shell.be ascerlaincd by the ccnuissioners of
the revenue, or either of them, by comparison of its value with that of other houses
or lots actually reted ; on every license to sell merchardize of foreign growth or
manufacture, by wholesale and retail, fort, dollars; on every license to retail such
goods, fifteen dollars; on every license to a himiker or pedlar, twenty dollars:-

ty belonging to this commonwealth, or to any county, town, college, or seminary
of learning, or attached to any house or houses lbr divine worship : Andprovided
also, That nothing in this act shall be so construed as to prevent any farmer or plant-
er from selling salt, sugar, tea, coffee, spices, iron, or steel to his neighbours, when
such articles were purchased as a return load on carrying their produce to market
in their waggons, or otherwise.

following manner: For the payment of the General Assembly at their next session, Specific a-

executed, three thousand dollars; for slaves transported, two thousand dollars;
lunatic hospital, six thousand five hundred dollars ; Richmond public guard, fifteen
d.ousand dollars; expense of manufacturing arms, including officers' salaries, forty
thousand dollars; for the completion of James river canal warehouse, seven hun-
dred and fifty dollars ; for th completion of the penitentiary building, one thousand
five hundred and seventy seven dollars ; expense of removing criminals to the peni-
tentiary, and their confinement therein, includihg officers' salaries, eight thousand
dollars; public services of district court clerks, one thousand seven hundred dol-
lairs ; interest on public debt registered, six thousand dollars ; interest due persons
who paid money into the treasury on account of British debts, three thousand do-
lars ; pensioners, five thousand five. hundred dollars; expense of representation to
Congress and the Senate of this state, three hundred dollars; an instalment on the
shares of the state, in. the bank of Virginia, thirty thousand dollars; commissioners
of the revenue, thirteen thousand five hundred dollars; contingent expenses of go,
verment, eleven thousand dollars; Upper Appomattox canal company, six humk
