Providing for the Appointnen! of Assessing Offleers.
Slc. 1.    le it enacted by the Seonate and House oJ 'lepre-
st'ntatives of the Hepliblic (Y' Teas. ijtongoress assembled,
That, in all ca-ses where, by reason of the death of the Chief Jus-
lice, or other cause, the returnilutf officers of a county have not
been appointed, aIreeably to the provisions of all act entitled an
act supplementary to an act entitled an act to raise a revenue by
direct taxation approved January 26thI 1S3; the Chief  icustie
of the county shall) be authorized and empowered to appoint the
returning officers as contemplated in tie albrereited act, trd the
said returiing officers thus appointed shall he required to make
their returns within two months from and after the date of their
appointment.

S ic.  . Ile it ',I(ted by/ the Nvitut und Iloise of Iepre-
sentatives of the 16,1imblir of Tr.ros, in C'on'r'css assembled,
That there shall he levied on the real, persoritl-or miixed proper-
t within this Republic, as defined in this aet, al direct tax, which
shall be levied, assessed and collected in the annmer and forin as
hereinafter provided.
Sac. 2. lie UI fiirther enwvrted, That therotlall ho appoin-
ted, in each coulty of (ijs Republic, one Assessor, which appoint-
mont shall be made by the Commissioners of Roads and Revenue
of tihe several counties, and each Assessor so appointed shall en-
ter into a bond, with good and suflicient sureties, to the satisfac-
tion of the Commissioners, conditioned on the faithful performance
of his duties; which bond shall be required of each Assessor in
luplicate, one of which shall be deposited in the oflice of the
Clerk of the County Court, and the other forthwith transmitted
to the Secretary of the 'reasury ; and it shall further be the du-
tv of the Commissioners to administer to each Assessor appointed
the oath prescribed for public officers, varying it to suit the duties
required of such Assessor.
