Be it 'enated by the General Assembly. oj the .state of
Tennessee, That fr6m and after the passage of this act, the
court of pleas and uarter sessions held for the counties of
Rutherford, 1Iaury and Grainger shall continue for the
space of two weeks if the justices composing said. courts
should think it necessary,,. unless. the  business therein
should be sooner disposed of.

Sec. 1. Be it enactedbU the General Assenbh; or the state..

shall cause the sheriff O the county where the offence nmay
have been committed, to summon three justices of the
peace of said county, and nine freeholders or slive-bolders,
residents of the same county, which said three justices and.
nine freeholders or slave-holders are hereby required and
empowered upon oath to try all manner of crimes and offen-
ces that shall or may be committed by any slave or-slaves,
and to take for evidence the confEssion of the off':nder. the
oath of one or more credible witnesses, or such testimony
of negroes, mulattoes or indians, bond or free, with preg-
nant circumstances, as to them shall seem convincing ; and
