AN ACT TO ALTER AND AMEND THE MILITIA LAWS or Tims STATE.         A. D. 1861.
1. De it enacted by the Senate and House of'Representatives, now mot and
sitting in General Assembly, aid by the authority of the same, That from No. 4705.

'AN ACT TO PR'EVENT AND PUNISH TIE PLANTING AND CULTIVATING IN TILS
STATE OVR A CERTAIN QUANTITY O COTTON DURING THE RESENT YEAR'
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, now met what Hilaves
and sitting in General Assembly, and by the authority of the same, That to be counted
an Act ontitled An Act to amend an Act entitled 'An Act to prevent and a handS.
punish the planting and cultivating in this State over a certain quantity of
cotton during the present year,'  ratified on the tenth day of April, in the
year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-throo, be, and the
same is hereby, altered and extended so that all slaves employed in agricul-
ture, within the meaning of said Act, between twelve years of ago and
sixty-five years of age, shall be counted as hands; and that all slaves under
twevo years of ago and over sixty-five years of age shall ho excluded in
the estimate of hands employed in agriculture.
In the Senate House, the twenty-third day of December, in the year
of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-four, and in the
eighty-ninth year of the sovereignty and independence of the State
of South Carolina.
