AN   ACT TO RAISE SUPPLIES FOR THE YEAR qOMMENOING IN OoBER,
No. 4269.
ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND FIFfY-SIX.
I. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, now met
and sitting in General Assembly, and by the authority of the same, That a tax
for the sums, and in the manner hereinafter mentioned, shall be raised and
paid into the public treasury of this State, for the use and service thereof,
that is to say : Sixty cents ad valoresn on every hundred dollars of the Tax on lands.
value of all the lands granted in this State, according to the existing
classification, as heretofore established; seventy cents per head on all slaves; Slaves, free
two dollars on each   free negro, mulatto, or mestizo, Egyptian    and negroes, &c.
Indian, (free Indians in amity with this government excepted,) between the
ages of fifteei and fifty years,'except such as shall be clearly proved to the
satisfaeibn of the Collector to be incapable, from  maims or otherwise, of
proc4iringalliVelihood; twelve and a half cents ad valorem on every hun- Lotsandbuild-
drid dollars or.the'value of all lots, lands, and buildings, within any city, igs.
owi, village,'or borough in this State; fifty cents per hundred dollars on Factorage, pro-
fae rage employments, faculties, and professions, including the profession resons, e.
of dentistry, (whether, in the profession of law, the profits be derived from
the costs of suit, fees, or other sources of professional income,) excepting
clergymen, schoolmasters, schoolmistresses, and mechanics, and on the
amouit of commissions received by vendue misters and commission mer-
chants.; twenty-five cents per hundred dollars on the capital stock paid in Bank stock.

Banks which, for their present charters, have not paid a bonus to the State;
twenty-five cents on every hundred dollars of capital of banks of issue out Bank capital.

companies, and by the agencies of insurance companies and underwriters

and-the unmanufactured products of any of the United States or Territories
