AN ACT To INCORPOIATR THE VILLAGE OF MARION, AND FOR OTHER
No. 4194.                       IPURPOSES THE1RIN MENTIONED.
I. Be it onactecl by the Senate and House of Reprosentatives, now met
A body cor- and sitting in Gcneral Assembly, and by the authority of the same, That
porate.      from  and after the passing of this Act, all persons, citienos of the United.
States, having resided six months in the village of Marion, shall be deemed
and ire hereby declared a body politic and corporate, and the said village
shall be called and known by the name of Marion, and its corporate limits
shall extend throo-fourths of a mile in the direction of the cardinal points
from the new Court-House now being erected in the said village, as a centre
and form a square : 1Poviled, That the provisions of this Act extending the
limits of the corporation of Marion to an ideal line beyond the lots included.
in the said village, shall not be construed to render the lands and buildings
taken in by such extension any more liable to be ranked as village property,
or property contiguous thereto, in the collection of public taxes, than if this
act had not been passed.
II. That the said village shall be governed by an Intendant and four
0oers.    Wardens, (who shall always be freeholders within the limits of said village,)
who shall be elected on the second Monday in January in every year, and
shall continue in office until the election and qualification of their successors.
The managers of the first election shall be appointed by the Clerk of the
Court of the District of Marion, who shall also' designate the place of said
election within the corporate limits of the said village; ten days' notice in
writing being previously given; and that every succeeding election for said
Intendant and Wardens shall be held at such place and by such persons as
Qaliflcation the Council shall thereafter designate and appoint; and that all free white
of voters.   male inhabitants of the said village who have attained the age of twenty-one
years; and have resided therein six months previous to the election, paupers
excepted, shall be entitled to vote for said Intendant and Wardens, the elec-
tion to be held front ten o'clock in the morning until three o'clock in the
afternoon, and when the poll shall be closed, the managers shall count the
votes, proclaini the election and give notice thereof in writing:to the persons
elected. That the Intendant and Wardens, before outering on the duties
of their oflices, shill take the oath prescribed by the Constitution of this
Oath.      State, and also the following oath, to wit: As Intendant or Warden of
Mariop, I do soleinly swear that I am duly qualified to exercise the office
to which I have boc elected, and that I will equally and impartially, to the
best of my ability, exercise the trust reposed in me, and will use my best
endeavors to preserve the peace, and carry into effect, according to law, the
purposes of my appointment-so help me God.
