No. 3075. AN ACT TO ALTER Tu LAW IN RELATION TO SLAVES HIRING THEIR
OWN TIMtE, AND FOit OTHER ruaPosEs.
Act amended.  Be it enacted, by the Senate and House of Representatives, now met
and sitting in Gonoral Assembly, and by the authority of the same, That
the sixth Section of an Act, ontitled  An Act for the better Regulation
and Government of Free Negroes and Persons of Color, and for other
purposes, passed the twenty-first day of Decomber, in the year of our
Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty-two, be so altered and
When to take amended, that from and after the twelfth lday of March next, it shall not
efect. be lawful for any person, owning, or having in charge, any male or fe-
male slave, to permit such slave to hire his or her time, labor or service;
and any person, owning, or having in charge, a slave or slaves, so offend-
ing, shall be liable to a penalty of Fifty Dollars, to be recovered by indict-
ment, one half of which shall be paid to the informer, and the other half
to the use of the District in which the offence is committed; and that all
provisions heretofore made by law in relation to said offence, be, and the
same are hereby repealed.
In the Senate House, the nineteenth day of December, in the year of our Lord
one thousand eight hundred an(1 forty-nine, and in the seventy-fourth year
of the Sovereignty and Independence of the United States of Anerica.
