Act abolishing certain punishments, and amending the law for
the trial of slaves and free persons of color, passed on'the 19th
day ofDecember, 1833.
Be it enacted, by -the Senate and House of Representa-
tives, That from and after the passing of this Act, in all cases
whatever, wherein any slave, or free person of color, shall be con-
victed of any offence, not capital, it shall, and may be lawful, for the
Court, before which such conviction shall take place, to punish the
said offender by imprisonment: Provided, that nothing in this Act
contained, shall be construed to abolish any of the other punishmouts
now provided by law in such cases.

CHAPTER 4.-An Act more effectually to prevent the illicit traffic
in Cotton, Rice, Corn, or Wheat, with slaves and fiee persons of
color.
Penaltyforpur-  SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Honorable the Senate and House
chasing cotton, of Representatives, now met and sitting in General Assembly and

rore or wheat, by the authority of the same, That from and after the first day of
ons a slave.  February next, if any shop-keeper or trader, shall directly or in-
directly, purchase from any slave, any Cotton, Rice, Indian Corn,
or Wheat, either with or without a permit, such shop-keeper or
trader shall, for every such offence, upon conviction thereof, be
finedin a sum not exceeding one thousand dollars, and be imprisoned
for a term not exceeding twelve months, nor less than'one month.
