GENERAL ASSE'LY Or SUTE CAROLINA,
DECEMBER SESSION, 1828.
tHAP. 1.-An ACT to raise supplies fbr the year one thousand eight
hundred and twenty-nine.
[Sec. 1.] Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Repre-
.sentatives, now -net and sitting in General Assembly, and by
the authority of the same, That a tax for the sums, and in the Taxtobe
manner hereinafter mentioned, shall be raised and paid into raised.
the public Treasury of this State, for the use and service there-
of, that is to say; thirty-seven and a half cents ad valorem, on
every hundred dollars of the value of all lands granted in this
State; the sum of seventy-five cents per head on all slaves of On lands,
every description, and the sum of two dollars on all free ne- slaves, city
groes, mulattoes, and mustizoes, except such as shall be clear- lots, &c.
lproved to the satisfaction of the Collectors to be incapable,
om Maims, or otherwise, of providing a livelihood, between
the ages of fifteen and fifty; and thirty-seven and a half cents,
ad valorem, on every hundred dollars of the value of all lots,
lands, and buildings within any city, town, village, or borough;
and seventy-five cents per hundred dollars on factorage, em-
ployment, ficulties, and professions, whether in the profession
of the Law the profits be derived from costs of suit, fees, or
other sources of professional income, and on the amount of
commissions received by vendue masters and commission mer-
chants, (clergymen, school-masters, school-niistresses, and me-
chanics excepted) to be ascertained and rated by the Assessors
and Collectors throughout this State, according to the best of
their knowledge and information-to be paid in specie, paper
medium, or the notes of the specie paying banks of this State.
Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That any person entitled to any Absentees
taxable property or estate in this State, who resides without double tax.
