CUIM'. I-An ACT to raike supplies for the year one thousand eight
hundred and  twinty-si x.
[Soc. -1.] BE it enacted by the Senate and louse
of Repr'esen/livees now met id silling in General .ris-

rl' the sums, and in the manner hereinalter mentioned, mised.
shall he raised and paid into the public Treasury of this
State, for the use and service thereof' ; that is to say, thir- On iands,
ty-secven and a halIf cents, ad valorem. on every hundred slaves, city
dollars of the value of all lands granted in this State ; the lots, &c.

mulattoes aid must izacs, exce!pt Nuch as shall be clearly
proved to the satisfact ion of the Collectors to be incapable
from maims, or otherwise of' providing a livelihood be-
.tween the ages of fifteen and fifty ; and thirty-seven and
a half cents, ad vularem, on every hundred dollars of the
value of all lots, lands and buildings within any city, town,
village or borough ; and seventy-five cents per hundred
dollars on facloragc employment, faculties, and professions,
and on the amount of commissions received by vendue
masters and connission merchants, (clergymen, school-
masters, school mistresses noid mechanics excepted) to be
ascertained and rated by the Assessors and Collectors
throughout this State, according to the best of their know-
ledge and information-to be paid in specie, paper me-
diumi, or the notes of the banks of this State.
See. 2. ./1nd be it further enacted by the authority
aforesaid, That any person entitled to any taxable pro- Absenteesto
party or estate in this State, who resides without the limits pav three-
of the United States, shall pay for the use of the State afald,
three-fold tax on the same ; but this clause shall not be
construed to extend to any person sent, or hereafter to be
sent abroad in the service of this State, or the United
States, until one year after the expiration of his com-
