T HE committee on claims, to whom was referred the petition of William Ashley,
J   prayinrg compensatioi for;a slave executed pursuant to a sentence of magistrates
and freeholders, beg leave to Report, That they hale had the petition and documents
inder consideration, and find the petitioner ow ned a negro boy, who was charged
with having committed in assault w ith an iunut to hill, upon the body of his mis.
tress. The committee also find that the said negro was regularly tried, convicted

law directs, and-to the amount of four hundred and fifiv dollars. The committee
therefore respectfully recommend that the prayeur of the s-id petiio  be granted,
and that the sinm of one hundredatid twenty-two dollars forty-two cents be appropri.

G. HIolhsnes, members of the bar in the town of Cuiuimbia, or so manly of thtem as
choose to undertake the same, be, and they are hereby authorized to erect, at their
owI expense, a range. of fire-proof brick offices on the court-house square, in the
town of Columbia, for their, use and benefit: Provided, That in the said range, a fit
and convenient room for a consultation and librarv room for the use of the Constitu.
tional Court and the Court of Appeals, be set apart: andprovidedalso, That the said
offices shall be used as law offices, and for no other purpose whatever. The persons
above named, or such as engage in the said undertaking, are hereby authorized to
dispose of their interest in the said offices to any person, a nmenber of the bar, to be
used as a law office, and for no other purpose.
Resolved, That the Board ot Public Works shall fix upon the scite upon the Court-
house square, oil which the said building shall be erected: that nothing in this reso-
Jution siall preclude the state, At any time, tron taking possession of the land upon
which the said buildings are proposed to be erected, upon paying to the person or
persons interested in, or owning the same, the value of the said offices, to be estima-
ted by six fit and proper persons, three of whni  sall be chosen by the state, and tie
other three bv (he persons interested in the said offices at the time of the said valia-
tion; and ill cise they difler, that they have power to call in a seventh person; and
that the said estimate, when made, be final,
