/         - shall be tried by a jury: And should the jury by their
verdict iind the said confession to be fraudulent, the judge
shall order the said confession to be set aside.
And be it further enacted, That the following and no
other fees shall be charged on any judgment so confessed
as aforesaid:
To the attorney or clerk; for issuing the execution, the
same fees which are now allowed by law. To the clerk,
for all other services in relation to the said confessed judg-
ment, if the same be for less than fifty dollars, one dollar;
if more than fifty dollars, two dollars.
In the Senate ouse, the twentieth day of December, in the year of our
Lord, one thousand eight hurulr ?d and twenty-one, and in the forty-
sixth year of the Independence of te United States ofdmerica.

B   E it enacted by the honorable the Senate and House of
) Representatives, now   met and sitting in General
.dAsembly, and by the authority of the same, I hat if Any
white person shall harbor, conceal or entertain any'runa
way or fugitive slav :, such person shall be liable to be
indicted for a misdemeanor, or prosecuted in a civil action
for damages, at the election of the owner or person injured:
and in case any person, being indicted, shall be convicted
of said offence, such person shall be fined and imprisoned
at the discretion of the court, no  exceeding one thousefd
dollars fine, nor one year's imprionment.
And be it firther enacted by the authority aforesaid,
That if any free negro, mulatto or mustizo, shall harbor,
conceal or entertain any fugitive or runaway slave, and be
convicted thereof, before two justices and five freeholders,
he shall suffer such corporeIl punnishment, not extending
to life or limb, as the said justices ano freeholders, who
try such offender, shall in their discretion think fit.
