General Assembly of South-Carolin4,
DECEMlBER SESSION, 1821.
An ACT to raise supplies for the year one thousand eight
hundred and twenty-two, and for othcr pumposes therein
mentioned.
B E it enacted by the honorable the Senate and House of
I    Representatives, now  en t and sitting in General
Assenbly, and by the authority of the sane, That a tax for Tax to be
the sums and in the manncr hereafter mentioned, shall be raisd.
raised and paid into the public treasury of this state, and
for the use and service thereof.
And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid,
That thirty-seven and one half cents ad valoren, on every On lands,

the wotes of the incorporated banks of this state, on all
lands granted within this state.
And be it further enacted, That seventy-five cents per
head shall be levied on all slaves of all ages and descrip- On Slaves,

cents ad valorem, on every hundred dollars of the value of
all lots and lands and buildings within any city, town, vil-
lage, or borough: and seventy-five cents per hundred dol-
lars, on all stock in trade, factorage employments, faculties,
and professions, (clergymen, school masters, and school
mistresses, and mechanics, excepted,) to be ascertained
and valued by the tssessors and collectors throughout this
state, according to the best of their knowledge and infor-
mation, to be paid in specie, paper medium, or the notes
of the banks of this state.
And be itfurther enacted, That every person entitled to Absentees
any taxable property or estate, in this state, who resides triple taxed
without the limits of the United States, shall pay, for the
use of thi5 state, a triple tax on the same; but this clause
shall not be construed to extend to any person sent, or
hereafter to be sent abroad, in the service of the United
