who may be summoned or compelled to work lupon the
streets of Ileaufort, shall not be compelled to work Upont
the roads in the country : Ald provi'ided also, That no
slave shall be compelled to work upon the streets of Beau-
fort more than twtlve days in one year.
Andbe itfiurther enacted by the authoritt aforesaid, That
the town council of Beaufort be, and they arve hIrchy au-
thorised to fill up ponds, drains, and pools of standing va-
ter within the limits of the town, and to assess the inhabi.-
tants of the town with the expenses of such works in pro-
portion to the benefit respectively received : Provided staid
assessmnett shall not exceed five per cent. ad valorem upot
the value df houses anil lots.

An ACT to providefor the more Vf cual performance of
Patrol DzitW.
B   E it enacted b the honorable the Senate and House of
L     Representatives, now tmet and sittingin -eneral a.-
semblU, and.by the authority of the same, That it shall be I'attrol dis
the duty of the captains of the several beat companies with- tricts to be'
in this state, within six nioutis after the piassing of thisCon,
act, to cause their respective beats to be divided int.o con-
venient patrol districts, which divisions, when made, shall
be permanent, until the same shall be altered by a inwjority
of the officers of the said company; and in case the captai
of any beat conupany shall neglect to perform  the duty
herein before required of hi m, he shall forfeit and pay the
sum of thirty dollars, to be recovered in any cours having
conipetent jurisdiction.'
.And be it ftrther enacted by the authoritif aforesaid,
That it shaIl be the duty of the commanding officer of each auis to be,
and every beat company, to cause to be made out, a roll uiady ot.
for each patrol district, which shall include the names of
al the free white nale inhabitants, above the age of eigh-
teen years, residing within the said patrol district: Pro-
oIded, That nothing herein containet shall be construed
to Comipel any inale inhabitant of any beat company to
