W  T HEREAS it appears to be highly impolitic to import negroes Preamble,
from Africa, or other places beyond feas:
Re it therefore enacted .by the Honorable the Senate and Houfe of Repre-
fentativess, now met and fitting in General .df1embly, and by the autho-
rity of thefame, That. th aimportation. of negroes from Africa, and mportationP
other places beyond feas, be,. and is hereby prohibited, until the firft of negroes
day of January, 1799: And every flave who thall be imported contrary prohibited to
to this a4, iponlandingo being landed, or condunted into this ftate, toJanlx,1799
fhal be forfeited; and the governor is hereby authorized and required,
to fell fuch. lav (one half of the proceeds of the fale to be for the bene-
fit of the ftate, the other half to the informer.)
.44be it further enacted by the authority. aforefaid, That the perfon, Penalty on
or perfens, who fhall import or bring in fuch flave, upon being convift- importers.
ed thereof, thallforfeit and  ay to the ftate fifty pounds for each flave
fo imported, or brought into this ftate: id the fhip, veffel, or other
vehicle in which fich flave DIall be to unlawfully imported, is hereby
4eclared refponfible for paying the fame, and fhall forthwith be taken
into poffegion, for and on bthalf of the ftate, unlefs thc offender, or of-
f~ndera; or fome. theor perfn, or perfons, will, before Come judge or ma-
giftrate, enter into bond, with ggod fecurity, to the. flate for payment
of the faid penalty, together with fch colts. and charges, as fhall be ad-
judged to be forfeilted, under or by virtue of this aft.
