VA ay. 21. AN ADDITIONAL AMENDMIENT TO AN ACT ENTITLED AN ACT TO
CONSOLIDATE TI VARIOUS ACTS HERE'TOVORE PASSED TO IN-
CORPORATE THE TOWN OF. STATESVILLE IN THE COUNTY OF
IREDELL.
Palrol. Be it tnacted by the General Assembly of the Stozte of
Nrth.-Carolina, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of
the same, That the town magistrates an( commissioners of
the town of Statesvilloiall have power to institute, appoint
and continue in said town a patrol guard and watch, who
shall have and exercise the power and authority of sup-
pressing within tho town, riots, ronts, unhtwfil assemlies
and other disorders tending to breaches of the peace, and
of arresting persons engaged thorein and confining them
within the common prison until thcy can be carried before
a justice of the peace or other magistrate for examination.
And as a mode of keeping up such patrol guard and watch
they shall cause an enrolment to be made of all the white
male citizepis of said town betwpen the ages of eighteen and
sixty years, and form them intosuitable classesand employ the
Mode of ser- classes in rotation. And the town magistrate and commission-
ers shall prescribe the terms, nature and mode of service of
said patro! watch, in regulations to be by them adopted and
published. And the commissioners shall also have the
power to employ a hired police force, -not exceeding three
in numbor, for said town, whose duties and powers shall ho
the same as the duties and powers herein assigned to the
Patrol watch, and shall also execute the precepts and pro-
cesses of the town magistrate, and aid and assist in the
enforcemement of the town ordinances with the same pow-
