CHAP. XLIl. An act to amend the acts making provision for the poor. Be it enacted by trie General .issembly'of the State of Worth.. Carolina, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That if any person chosen 'my the Wardens of the Poor of a County to fill a vancancy in their bodiy, shall refuse to qualify and serve, he shall be liable to the Fame penalty as im by law imposed on those who refune to qualify and serve, when elect- ed at a general election of Wardens of the Poor. CHAP. XLIII. -An set providing further punishment for harboring or maintaining runaway slaves. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of North.- Carolina, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That in addition to the penalty aheady imposed by law, any pec. son who shall entice or persuade any slave to absent him or her- self from the service of his or her owner, or from the service of any other person legally entitled to the service of such slave, or who shall harbor or maintain any runaway slave, shall be sub. ject to indictment for such offence, and, being thereof convicted, shall be fined at the discretion of the Court, not exceeding one hundred dollars, and be imprisoned not exceeding six months. CHAP. XLIV. An act to increase the salary of the Secretary of State, and for other pur. poses., Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of North.
